As I walked up to Columbia Heights Coffee for my daily cup of coffee, I was saddened to hear they have closed their doors after over a decade in business.

When I first started working on 11th Street, I was thrilled to find a neighborhood coffee shop to call my own. The owner, Tsege, and I chatted every day, and a lot of that time was spent just trying to pronounce each other’s names (mine is not so easy to remember). She was determined to learn it, so that every day when I walked in she could greet me with her infectious smile and make me feel like I was part of her family. My diet has suffered greatly in the months that passed, but I didn’t mind because I was enjoying delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and lattés made with love, and I knew I was supporting a terrific local business. All of us here on 11th street are going to miss Columbia Heights Coffee, but most of all, we are going to miss the lovely owners, Tsege and Nadew, who were such a part of our daily routine. We wish you the best of luck in your next venture and know that you have left a lasting impression in our hearts.
